Degree in Biological Sciences (1993) and PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Córdoba (1998). From 1998 to 2001, I was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Botany, University of Hamburg, Germany. From 2001 to 2006, I worked as a hired Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology of SEK University, Segovia, Spain. In 2006, I joined the Department of Genetics at the University of Córdoba as a Senior Postdoc. In 2010, I obtained a competitive Ramón y Cajal Junior Professorship and in 2016 I was promoted to Assistant Professor. Since 2019, I am Associate Professor of Genetics and serve as Vice Dean of Planning and Academic Coordination of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Córdoba. My research has focused on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity in fungal plant pathogens, including the identification of virulence genes and the elucidation of their role during infection. I am particularly interested in the aspects of infection that are broadly conserved across fungal pathogens regardless of the host species. I have participated in numerous research projects funded by the Spanish Government, the European Union and the regional Government (Junta de Andalucía). I have co-authored scientific articles in high-impact international journals of Genetics, Microbiology, Biology and Molecular and Cellular Pathology. I have co-directed 4 PhD Theses, as well as numerous BSc and MSc Theses at the University of Córdoba. I am a Member of the Spanish Society of Microbiology, the International Society of Plant-Microbe Molecular Interactions and the American Society of Microbiology. I have served as project evaluator for the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MININN) and as reviewer for different scientific journals including Current Genetics, Journal of Plant Pathology, The Open Mycology Journal, FEBS Letters and Eukaryotic Cell.
